Know Your Still
So you have made your first few batches of basic spirits. Good on you! We are sure that your friends and family have been impressed and you are keen to impress them even more.
Welcome to the exciting world of home distilling and as your skill levels increase there is a vast array of exotic spirits, schnapps and liqueurs for you to explore.
Firstly though you need to know your way around your still and what sort of still options are available.
There are two basic stills suitable for home use (where legal).
Air StillsThis revolutionary type of pot still is air-cooled and doesn’t use water at all, which is great news for drought affected or water restricted regions. What’s more, it’s compact and as easy to use as your kitchen kettle. Most other air stills are made largely to distil water and often work too hot or too fast to produce good quality spirit, but the Turbo Air Still is designed to work at the correct temperature and optimum rate for alcohol distillation. It’s fast too, distilling 4 litres of wash to make 1 litre of spirit in just two hours. It’s also made from high quality stainless steel. It produces distillate at about 55% abv. As this still is a pot still and the alcohol is not “purified” in a reflux column it is important to produce the wash from ingredients that will produce the highest quality wash: Triple Distilled Turbo, Turbo Carbon and Turbo Clear. |

Reflux StillsReflux Stills include a column/chamber where the distillate is continuously purified during distillation. This process involves the distillate in vapour form being encouraged to condense into tiny droplets that pass back down the column. The ascending vapour then reheats these droplets driving off the alcohol which has a lower boiling point than water. The descending droplet also strips any water from the rising vapour. The water droplets then return to the boiler allowing a higher portion of alcohol to be collected. |
